Common questions we hear.
Why are you leaving Ameriprise? I thought you’d never leave.
Our team has given this transition a great deal of thought. We are incredibly grateful for the foundation Ameriprise provided us over the years. But as our clients’ needs have grown more complex, we began to see limitations especially around investment flexibility, technology, and advanced planning tools. We didn’t want those limitations to get in the way of the advice and service you deserve. That’s why we made the move to independence—and why we chose to partner with Goldman Sachs: to ensure your experience continues to evolve with your goals and expectations.
What does it mean to be independent? Are you still regulated?
Being independent means we no longer work for a brokerage firm like Ameriprise. We now have the freedom to choose the best resources, tools, and investments for you.
Yes, we remain fully regulated. Laurel Oak Wealth Management is a Registered Investment Advisor (RIA), regulated by the SEC and held to the highest fiduciary standard. That means we are legally required to act in your best interest at all times.
Will this affect my accounts or investments?
The transition is designed to be seamless. Your accounts will transfer “in kind,” meaning there’s no selling of investments or tax impact unless we decide together that changes are needed. Your cost basis and performance data will move with your accounts. We’ll review everything post-transfer to ensure it’s accurate and aligned with your goals.
Why should I move with you?
Our relationship is built on trust, transparency, and shared goals. We’ve made this move so we can continue to grow with you and deliver the level of service you’ve come to expect, without several restrictions we had previously. Through our partnership with Goldman Sachs, we’re able to offer enhanced security, cutting-edge technology, and institutional-level support. What hasn’t changed is our commitment to you. If you’ve valued our partnership, we believe you’ll find this next chapter even better.
What if I move and don’t like the new firm?
We understand that change can feel uncertain—and your comfort remains our top priority. While some things are evolving, your advisory team is the same, and the core of our relationship hasn’t changed. What has changed is the level of support, technology, and flexibility we now have to serve you even better. If at any point the new experience doesn’t meet your expectations, we’ll work closely with you to find the right path forward. Your trust means everything to us, and we’re here to make this transition feel seamless and worthwhile.
Will I have to pay fees to move my account?
In most cases, there are no fees to transfer your accounts. We’ve worked closely with Goldman Sachs to make the process as seamless and cost-effective as possible. If any specific fees apply to your unique holdings, we’ll review them with you in advance so there are no surprises.
Will my financial plan change?
Not at all. In fact, it should only get better. Your financial plan remains at the center of everything we do. With our expanded flexibility as an independent firm, we can now enhance your plan with more personalized strategies and cutting-edge tools. We’ll revisit your plan together after the transition to ensure it continues to meet your evolving goals.
How long will the transition take?
Once you complete the DocuSign paperwork, most accounts transition within 5–7 business days. We’ll track the process every step of the way and keep you updated. Our team will coordinate everything to ensure it’s as smooth and timely as possible.
What happens if something goes wrong during the transfer?
We’re here to handle any issues that may arise. Our operations team has handled many transitions, and we’re partnered with Goldman Sachs’ transition support staff to resolve any complications quickly. You’ll never be left alone in the process; we’ll stay in close communication from start to finish.
How do I access my accounts after the move?
Once your accounts are established with Goldman Sachs, we’ll walk you through setting up your new client portal. It’s intuitive and secure and allows you to view all your accounts, documents, and reporting in one place. If you ever need help, our team will support you directly.
Is my money safe with Goldman Sachs?
Absolutely. Goldman Sachs is one of the most respected financial institutions in the world. As custodian, they are responsible for securely safeguarding your assets. They bring decades of experience, robust compliance protocols, and top-tier cybersecurity infrastructure.
Can I move only part of my accounts and leave some with Ameriprise?
While technically possible, we strongly recommend transitioning your full portfolio so we can manage your plan holistically. Partial portfolios limit our ability to provide comprehensive advice, monitor your allocations, and coordinate tax planning effectively.
What will change about how you work with me?
You’ll notice that our advice goes deeper. We’re no longer limited by a corporate framework, which means we can tailor solutions, bring in third-party specialists, and serve you with true independence. We aim to become even more proactive and comprehensive in our partnership
with you.
Who do I call if I have questions during the transition?
You can always call your advisor directly, but our entire Laurel Oak team is available to support you. We have dedicated personnel managing the transition logistics, so you’ll never have to wonder who to contact. You’ll have a direct line to someone who knows your situation and is ready to help.
